Anatomy of a Sentence

Phrases are groups of words.  Clauses are groups of words with a subject and a predicate (verb).  A Clause may be able to stand alone as a sentence (Independent clause) or unable to stand alone (dependent clause)

One independent clause makes up a simple sentence.  A simple sentence may also contain phrases.

Two or more independent clauses joined together create a compound sentence.  When a coordinating conjunction (F.A.N.B.O.Y.S.) joins the two clauses together, they tell the reader how the two clauses are related.  

Tomorrow, we will introduce an alternative way of joining compound sentences, and discuss Complex sentences-- One independent clause and one dependent clause.
